What is Filoxenia?
A Brief History of Our Family’s Introduction to the Hospitality Industry
Our family's journey into the hospitality industry began in the 1950s when they immigrated to Australia in search of a new beginning. Typically, migrants to Australia needed a sponsor—usually a relative or friend who already lived and worked here. Our families arrived with nothing but their suitcases, starting their new lives from scratch.
The early years were challenging as they navigated a new language and culture. Initially, they worked for the relatives who had sponsored them, often in family-run businesses such as fish and chip shops, fruit shops, milk bars, or cafes. The wages were meager, but it was an opportunity. Part of their earnings went towards repaying their sponsors.
Despite these tough times, they scrimped and saved, determined to start their own businesses and build their families. After fulfilling their obligations to their sponsors, it was time to venture out on their own.
Both of our families were eager to own and run their own businesses. Dora’s parents’ first independent venture was the “Gardenia Café” in Cowra, NSW, marking the start of their hospitality journey and the introduction of their brand of Filoxenia. This venture was successful, and Dora’s parents went on to open and run other businesses, including a fish and chip shop and a hotel, all embodying their Filoxenia spirit.
Andrew’s parents began with a fruit shop, then expanded to a milk bar, a fish and chips shop, supermarket, liquor store, and finally a café, all of which were successful. They too instilled their unique brand of Filoxenia in each of these businesses.
The success of both families is a testament to the resilience and support of the family unit. Family and Filoxenia are intertwined; one cannot exist without the other.
The photos displayed in the café showcase a journey through time, featuring cafes, fish and chip shops, and fruit shops, but most importantly, they highlight the family, which has always been at the heart of our journey. Without family, there is no Filoxenia.
Filoxenia is a unique word encompassing a variety of meanings: love, friendship, hospitality, kindness, comfort, welcoming, family, bonding, support, honor, and respect. This is just a small list of what we believe to be important to our customers, friends, family, and our Café Leura team members. As always, we strive to improve and learn every day. Each day holds new beginnings and challenges. We look forward to greeting you and seeing you. We want you to experience Filoxenia.
When next in Leura, come in to Cafe Leura and experience our family and filoxenia.
